A Day in the Life of: Mark Waring, UK Group CFO

Mark Waring - Day in the life

Mark joined the business in September last year to oversee the financial health of Rainford, but also Telenco’s other UK businesses; Telenco UK, the distribution and logistics operation in Swindon (formerly Telkom International) and CTTS, a specialist telecommunications training provider in Lincoln, which was acquired by Telenco in 2021. Previously, he was Financial Director for a fresh produce company near Preston.

Mark has taken over the reins from Duncan Crawford, who has retired after 17 years as Rainford’s Financial Director, but with a wider remit to include the other two businesses.  Based predominantly at Rainford’s site, he also spends some of his week at the other locations.

Responsible for the financial management and governance of the businesses, Mark says there’s no such thing as a typical day which is what makes the job enjoyable. Each business is very different, and he’s been learning about each operation and what they do. He admits to now noticing outdoor enclosures everywhere he goes and is working on spotting which are Rainford’s.

Mark was drawn to the business by Rainford’s team culture, energy and growth ambitions.  “It sounds like a cliché’, but it’s a proper team effort here,” he says “Everyone is full of fresh ideas, energy and the business is in a very exciting position. It’s grown significantly in the last few years and has ambitions to grow even further over the next 12-18 months.

“I’m very excited to be part of that. Duncan has been a fantastic FD and has left a very strong base on which to build, as well as some big shoes to fill! There will be some challenges ahead, I’m sure, but I’m looking forward to it.”

Mark is an avid Liverpool supporter, so much so that he named his son Keegan (after legendary Liverpool player Kevin Keegan). A season ticket holder, Mark and his son go to almost every game. In between matches he tries to keep fit and make sure he gets his daughter to football practice each weekend too.
