IP Ratings define the level of protection an electrical enclosure provides against solids, dust, accidental contact and water ingress.

An IP rating, also known as an Ingress Protection rating or IP code, is used to classify the degree of protection provided by an enclosure for electrical and electronic equipment.

IP Rating Standards are defined by IEC 60529, which establishes a consistent method for identifying how effectively an enclosure protects equipment from foreign objects, dust and moisture.

What do the two digits in an IP Rating mean?

IP Ratings use two digits to describe the level of ingress protection provided by an enclosure. The first digit relates to protection against solid objects, while the second indicates protection against water. Higher numbers generally represent a greater level of protection.

First digit – protection against solids

The first digit within an Ingress Protection Rating indicates how effectively an enclosure prevents access to hazardous parts and protects equipment from solid foreign objects such as tools, wires, airborne dirt and dust. The scale increases as the level of protection becomes more comprehensive.

Second digit – protection against water

The second digit defines how effectively an enclosure protects internal equipment against water ingress. This ranges from limited protection against dripping water through to stronger protection against sprays, water jets and more demanding moisture exposure.

What does “X” mean? In some IP enclosure ratings, a digit may be replaced by the letter “X”. This means that a protection level has not been specified or formally rated for that particular part of the IP code.

Understanding IP Ratings

The tables below explain how each digit within an IP Rating represents a different level of protection. The first digit identifies protection against solid objects and dust, while the second digit identifies protection against water and moisture.

First digit – solid object protection

Protection against contact, foreign objects and dust.

Rating Protection level
0 No protection against contact or solid objects.
1 Protected against solid objects greater than 50 mm, including accidental contact by hands.
2 Protected against solid objects greater than 12 mm, such as fingers.
3 Protected against solid objects greater than 2.5 mm, including tools and wires.
4 Protected against solid objects greater than 1 mm, such as small wires and similar objects.
5 Dust protected. Limited dust ingress may occur, but not enough to interfere with normal operation.
6 Dust-tight protection with no ingress of dust.

Second digit – water protection

Protection against dripping, spraying and projected water.

Rating Protection level
0 No protection against water or moisture.
1 Protected against vertically falling drops of water, including condensation.
2 Protected against water falling at an angle of up to 15° from vertical.
3 Protected against water sprayed at an angle of up to 60° from vertical.
4 Protected against water splashing from all directions. Limited ingress is permitted.
5 Protected against low-pressure water jets from all directions. Limited ingress is permitted.
6 Protected against strong water jets from all directions. Limited ingress is permitted.
Example – IP65: the number 6 means the enclosure is dust-tight, while the number 5 indicates protection against water jets. Understanding both digits helps determine the appropriate IP rated enclosure for a particular installation environment.
